Treetops Adventure Course in Coffs Harbour with Kids
The kids recently spent an amazing morning out at Treetops high-ropes course in Coffs Harbour and I just have to share all about it! We waited until my youngest was old enough to enjoy it, and boy was it worth the wait! If you’ve thought about taking the kids, here’s all you need to know:
Yes there are ziplines! They should have called it Ziplining and High Ropes because there are so many fun ziplines on all the courses, from the beginner up to the hardest one.
There are four different courses for ages 3-7, and another 4 courses for ages 8+.
The only kids I saw having any trouble were quite small (under 5). Although Treetops says 3+ can do it, the height recommendation on their website is 120cm, which is way more helpful. I’ve heard from friends that they took their kids too young, before they could enjoy it. I waited till my youngest was 5.
There are four different courses for ages 8+, which I’ve done myself and the height recommendations are really accurate. The courses are fun, but being able to reach the spot where your safety harness attaches to is a challenge if you aren’t tall enough.
You need to book your session time online, before you get there. The sessions are 2.5hrs.
Most young kids don’t last 2.5hrs, so pack snacks for a little energy boost if they need it. They get really hot too, it’s basically full on exercise the whole time, so bring water!
There are heaps of mozzies and bugs around in the warmer months, and apparently leeches in the rain too, so make sure to bring your insect repellent.
Get the kids to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. The harness pulls their clothes in tight, so don’t let them wear crop tops or short shorts.
Get the kids to go to the toilet before they get their harnesses on. Even better, go at home, because there’s only a stinky drop toilet and no running water for washing hands (not ideal with kids).
The kids will do a short training session where they learn the rules and how to hook and unhook their safety harness onto the ropes. Then they get to do a supervised run through the easiest track, which most kids breeze through. Hooking and unhooking the buckle is one of the main challenges for younger kids.
Go with friends! This was the biggest help. If your kids are nervous or you’re not sure if they’ll like it, get them to go with some friends. There’s something about having other kids there that encourages them to go and play.
I told the kids it was like an obstacle course in the trees that you get to play on, with a zip line at the end. Sometimes their enjoyment is based on how you phrase it. The higher, more challenging courses for teens and adults are a really great challenge and the zip lines are FUN.
Adults can’t go on the kids’ courses with them, the kids will be on their own. This is another reason to take friends or siblings. The taller kids can help the shorter ones. I loved seeing how my kids helped each other out and got through the challenges together, I didn’t expect it to be such a great bonding experience.
The drive up to Treetops is beautiful, make sure to check out the lookout at Forest Sky Pier where there is a café area and public toilets.
I think if you take an 8-10 year old, they’d struggle on the adults courses. Treetops says they need a participating adult with them.
The tickets get more expensive once your kid turns 8, so if you’ve got a 5-7 year old, now’s a great time to give them a go.
Treetops host birthday parties if you want to get a group of friends to go together.
We absolutely LOVED visiting Treetops and the kids had so much fun. It was one of the highlights of our holidays.
